Seili

Location: Seili, Archipelago Sea, Länsi-Turunmaa town, Finland

Seili is a true pearl of the Archipelago Sea with its rich history and beautiful landscape. In the past centuries leprocy and mental patients were banished into the Seili island. The precious wooden church of Seili dating from 1733 reminds from lepracy patients´ times having separate compartment for patients having this frightening but nowadays treatable disease.

The mental hospital operated until 1960´s after which the Archipelago Research Institute of the University of Turku has hosted the former hospital buildings. The Institute carries out multidisciplinary research of the Baltic Sea, with a special focus on the Archipelago Sea.
